Just like a computer, the output is only as good as the input. It's no different with preparation of quality furs. If we receive damaged skins, or ones that have been mistreated, they will not be well received by taxidermists or hunters.
Here are some suggestions to insure quality results for your precious skins:
Ensure that the skins are scraped free and clear of grease and fat. Clean off the meat and fat by using a curiors knife or scalped knife, etc. The lips, nostril split and ears need to be turned. Not following through with this procedure will hinder the preservation process.
When salting your skins make certain that you use 100% non-iodized granulated salt. First, make sure you leave the skin stretched without wrinkles (use gloves when handling skin to prevent body heat from transmitting to the skin). Second, make certain that every part is covered generously. After a few hours go back and reground the same salt. Salt tends to form a crusty layer, regrounding the salt assures that it is doing the job of preservation. Repeat this two days, on second day reapply a fresh batch of salt discarding the first batch.
During and after salting, keep them in a moisture free environment away from heat and direct sunlight.
